Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - In its third Atlantic 10 match-up Rhode Island was victorious beating the Hawks 2-1 in overtime on Sunday afternoon. The Rams are now 6-6-0 on the season and 3-0-0 in the Atlantic 10.

The Rams were up 1-0 six minutes into the first as junior Melanie Kasparek (Trumbull, Conn.) took a cross from twin sister Megan to give Rhode Island the advantage.

The Rams were able to hold to the 1-0 lead but with just one minute remaining in the first Hawk Ginette Buffone took a shot to the left of goalkeeper Ria Carroll (Warwick, R.I.) for the goal and the 1-1 tie leading into halftime.

Second half, the Rams hit the Hawks hard on defensive side of the ball only allowing two shots compared to the 10 shots made by the Rams. The half went scoreless and the game was forced into overtime for the tiebreaker.

With ten minutes on the clock the Rams wasted little time. Freshman Debra Nelson (Chepachet, R.I.) took a shot but it was blocked by a Hawk defender. The clock ticked down and with less than three minutes to play Lauren Forgione (Southington, Conn.) got control and connected with Aimee Lambert (Fairport, N.Y.) about five yards out and Lambert was able to knock the ball into the back of the net to end the game and to earn the win.

On the day Rhode Island out-shot Saint Joseph's 22-6 with Nelson leading the shot count at six for the Rams. Goalkeeper Ria Carroll had two saves in goal, while Hawk Jen Kuhn had 11.

The Rams will be back in action on Friday October 8, as they face George Washington at 7:00 p.m.
