Final Stats
KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island fell to Providence College, 69-66, at the Ryan Center in women's basketball action on Saturday. For the second game in a row, sophomore Safi Mojidi led the Rams' in scoring with 15 points. The Friars' Ashley Etheridge led all scorers with 21 points.
Three other Rams' joined Mojidi in double figures. Freshman Jessica Magley scored 14 points followed by senior Tanya Rhodes with 12. Sophomore Mia Marcus scored 11 points for the third time this season.
Chelsea Marandola added 18 points and had seven assists for Providence. Kristen Brown scored 13 points to closeout the Friar double-figure scorers. Two Friars' pulled in double figure rebounds, Shantee Darrian with13 and Gayle Nwafill with 12 boards.
After freshman Tanja Licina scored the opening field goal for URI, the Rams' trailed the throughout the first half. With 4:31 left in the half, Marcus hit a jumper to bring Rhode Island with in one, 29-28. PC went on a, 9-4, run to lead, 38-32, as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
URI fell to its largest deficit of the game of 15, not scoring during the first five minutes of the second half. Then in true Rhode Island fashion, the Rams' began to chip away at the Friars' lead.
Junior Justine Boisvert finally put the Rams' up, 55-53, on a bucket from long distance with 7:22 left in the game. Three minutes later Darren gave PC back the lead with a made free throw. The lead bounced back and forth until the Friars took the final three-point lead on a Mardola lay-up followed by two Nwafili free throws.
URI will have a long two and a half week break to celebrate the holidays before it heads to Gainesville, Fla. to take-on Florida and Liberty. The Rams' will face the Gators on Wed. (Dec. 28) at 8:00 pm and Liberty on Fri. (Dec. 30) at 5:30 p.m.
