Women's Soccer Falls At No. 5 Virginia, No. 24 Maryland

Aug. 28, 2005

The Rhode Island women's soccer team opened the 2005 season with a pair of tough road losses in three days to nationally ranked teams. Friday's season opener saw the Rams fall, 6-0, at No. 5 Virginia, followed by a 4-0 loss at No. 24 Maryland on Sunday.

On Friday, Virginia (1-0) jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead and never looked back en route to a victory in its season opener. Sunday also saw Maryland get out to a quick first-half lead, 3-0, on its way to the win.

Senior Ria Carroll was credited with 10 saves in goal for the Rams against Virginia, and nine against Maryland.

The Rams will look to get first-year head coach Zach Shaw his first win this week when they travel to the Auburn Invitational. URI will face South Carolina at 4:30 p.m. on Friday (Sep. 2), before taking on the host Tigers at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday (Sep. 4).
