WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team shutout the University of Hartford, 7-0 to capture its first win of the season Sunday at Al Marzook field. The Rams move to 1-4 on the season.

"I am thrilled with today's result," said first year head coach Zac Shaw. "But I am most pleased with the way we played. Finally all our hard work has culminated into a win."

Dora Larusdottir, a freshman from Iceland, scored the first goal of the game off a cross from sophomore Debra Nelson, 14:27 into the game. The rest of the half remained scoreless.

The Rams put the game out of reach for the Hawks early in the second half of play. Larusdottir scored her second goal of the game 8:33 minutes into the half. Thorunn Jonsdottir, also from Iceland fed the ball to Larusdottir for a break away goal to give the Rams the 2-0 lead.

"I am very proud of the way the team came into this game with a positive attacking attitude," said Shaw.

Ten minutes later Jonsdottir added goal number three, with a long blast from 20-yards out. Two minutes later senior Megan Kasparek used a deflection from twin sister Melanie Kasparek to score goal number four.

Jonsdottir scored her second goal of the game at the 66:58 mark, on a direct kick into the top right corner of the goal. Less than a minute later Melanie put the Rams up 6-0, with her first goal of the season.

Florence, Ky. native Jessica Gadd scored the final goal of the game with less than 14 minutes left in regulation. She chipped the ball from 15-yards out over Hawk goalkeeper, Liz Cook's hands for Ram goal number seven.

URI out shot Hartford 17 to nine, and Ram goalkeeper, Ria Carroll tallied three saves for the game.

"We are looking forward to playing at home for the first time this season," Shaw said. "We just need to continue to play aggressively and focus on the process. From there the results will take care of themselves."

For its home opener URI will play host to Vermont on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m. and New Hampshire Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the URI Soccer Complex.
