Final Stats
KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island women's soccer won, 5-3 over New Hampshire Sunday for its third straight win of the season. Melanie Kasparek and Kayla Reels both contributed two goals to the Ram victory.
New Hampshire struck first when Adriana Gonzalez-Medina found the back of the net off a Wildcat corner one minute into the game. UNH's leading scorer Sara Hourihan scored goal number two, four minutes later.
At the 14:02 mark Kayla took a short pass from Melanie to get the Rams on the board. With 25 minutes left in the first half, Melanie tied the score, 2-2, as she drew the goalie out and was able to shoot into an open net.
Two minutes later Melanie scored again to put URI ahead, 3-2, with an assist from Thorunn Jonsdottir.
With four minutes left in the first half, Katrina Reels scored the game winning goal off a deflected shot from teammate Rebecca Fish. It was her first goal of the season. The Rams led 4-2 heading into the second half.
"The way the team persisted today says a lot about their character," said head coach Zac Shaw. "To go down by two goals in the first five minutes and come back and be up by two goals at the half showed me this team has a strong desire to win."
Kayla scored her second goal of the game 18 minutes into the second half to give the Rams the 5-2 advantage.
New Hampshire scored the final goal of the game with five and a half minutes left in regulation. Hourihan headed the ball into the back of the net for the Wildcats third goal.
Ram goalkeeper, Ria Carroll picked-up her third win of the season making four saves on seven shots on goal. URI out shot UNH 19 to 12.
Rhode Island women's soccer will be in action again on Friday, Sept. 23 as they play host to University of Maine. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the URI Soccer Complex.
