Women's Soccer Sees Four-Game Win Streak Come To An End With 2-0 Loss To Dayton

Oct. 8, 2006

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island women's soccer team saw its four-game win streak come to an end on Sunday, October 8, as it was defeated by Dayton, 2-0. The loss also ended the Rams' 13-game unbeaten streak at home, dating back to a 1-0 loss to La Salle on October 22, 2004.

Dayton didn't waste much time getting things started, as Colleen Gibson grabbed a loose ball in the midfield and headed straight for the box where she maneuvered through the Rhody defense and sent a shot past URI freshman goalkeeper Amanda Thomas (State College, Pa.) at the 3:02 mark. The goal was the first that the Rams had allowed since Sept. 27 when Harvard found the back of the net. Thomas entered today's game having not allowed a goal in the previous 297:54, including three-consecutive shutouts of A-10 foes La Salle, George Washington and Xavier.

The Flyers scored an insurance goal at 21:20, when they capitalized on their only corner kick of the half. Kim Sacher sent a perfect kick to the far post where Caitlin Proffitt was there to head the ball past Thomas for the 2-0 advantage.

URI drew two corners in the final minute of the half. Junior Thorunn Jonsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) took both, first sending the ball to freshman Kristie Moltz (Pottstown, Pa.), whose shot was blocked by a Dayton defender, and then to junior leading-scorer Deb Nelson (Chepachet, R.I.) whose shot went just wide of the net.

Eight minutes into the second half, sophomore Rebecca Fish (Wakefield, R.I.) converted a Dayton foul into an excellent scoring opportunity for the Rams, sending the free kick into the box where it appeared as though Nelson would head in URI's first goal of the game. However, Dayton keeper Tasha Dittamore made a diving save to keep the ball out of the net and the Rams off the board. Two minutes later Dittamore made another great save when she stopped Fish's shot just beneath the crossbar. Rhode Island's final chance came in the final 90 seconds when Nelson fired a shot that deflected off the crossbar.

In all, Rhode Island was outshot, 14-10. Thomas made six saves in net for the Rams while Dittamore made four stops for the Flyers.

The Rams (7-7-0, 3-1-0 A-10) return to action on Friday, October 13, when they travel to Temple (3-8-0, 0-2-0 A-10) for a 3:00 p.m. match against Owls.
