KINGSTON, R.I. - Despite a career-high 21 points (including 18 in the first half) by sophomore guard Amanda McGrew, Boston University defeated Rhode Island, 82-66, in women's basketball action in the Ryan Center.
The Rams started off strong in the first half, opening the game with a 13-6 run, including seven points from McGrew, to lead by seven at the 13:54 mark. Rhode Island took its largest lead of the game, 21-12, with 11:18 to play in the first half on a lay-up by sophomore forward Sierra Cooper, who finished the evening with a career-high 12 points to go along with nine rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench.
The Terriers (1-0) clawed their way back into the game with a 21-12 run of their own over the next 7:45 to tie the game, 33-33, with 3:22 on the clock. A 10-4 run to finish the half put BU on top, 43-37, after 20 minutes of play.
"We lost our energy early and never recovered," said URI coach Tom Garrick. "We need to figure out what we are capable of and will continue to work on how to play a full 40-minute game."
Boston University would open the second half on a 19-9 run to lead 62-46 with 12:29 on the clock and build its lead to as many as 21 points at 72-51 with 7:22 to play in the game.
It was the second time in two games to open the season that the Rams built a first half lead, but faded in the second half. In their season opener against Virginia last Friday night, the Rams led by as many seven points in the first half against the Cavaliers, but faded in the second half for a 69-56 loss.
Junior guard Safi Mojidi also scored in double-digits for URI, totaling 10 points to go along with a game-high seven assists.
The Rams hit the road for a two-game southern swing this weekend, playing at Tulane on Friday at 8:00 p.m. before taking on Mississippi at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
