KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island sophomore guard Safi Mojidi scored a team-high 17 points - all in the second half - but it was Providence taking an 81-59 home victory Friday night.
Providence (9-3) shot 50.9 percent from the field, including 11-of-21 (52.4%) from three-point range for the game. Friar sophomore Chelsea Marandola finished the game with 29 points, including 6-of-6 three-pointers, to go along with 11 rebounds.
Rhode Island (1-11) would trail by as many as 17 in the first half, a margin that would grow as large as 26 in the second half en route to its sixth-straight loss.
URI sophomore forward Sierra Cooper tied a career high with 12 points to go along with a team-high six boards in the loss. Providence out-rebounded the Rams by a slim 34-32 margin, and was able to turn 17 Rhody turnovers into 20 points.
The Rams next head to the West Coast for a pair of games at two first-time opponents. URI faces off with Pepperdine on Thursday, Dec. 28, before taking on California on Tuesday, Jan. 2. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 10:00 p.m. EST.
