Rhody Runs Past Fordham, 79-65

KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior forward Tanya Rhodes (Norwalk, Conn.) scored a career-high 29 points notching her seventh double double with 12 rebounds to lead Rhode Island past Fordham, 79-65, in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action at the Ryan Center Sunday. Sophomore guard Safi Mojidi (Silver Springs, Md.) followed with 21 points, six assists and four steals in the win.

Rhode Island (8-17, 5-9 A-10) picked up its second straight conference win after defeating St. Bonaventure, 67-60, on Friday.

Fordham (8-17, 3-11 A-10) had two players score in double digits. Jada Jefferson and Lisa Carrol both poured in 18 points for the Rams. Jefferson also led her team on the boards with nine rebounds.

Rhode Island started the game with 6-0 run during the first two minutes before Carrol put the first points for Fordham on the board. Fordham then jumped out to lead by nine (26-17) with 8:35 left to play in the half. URI battled back to cut Fordham's lead to three (35-32 heading into the locker rooms. Throughout the first half URI forced the Rams to commit 14 turnovers on which Rhode Island scored 16 of its 32 points.

Fordham extended its lead back to five on a lay-up by Vanessa Silva two minutes and 35 seconds into the second half. Sophomore Erin Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) gave the URI the lead, 40-39, which they never relinquished with 17 minutes left in the game.

Over the last 16 minutes of the game Rhodes and Mojidi combined to score 30 points for Rhode Island. With 2:29 left to play Rhodes gave URI its largest lead of the game, making a free throw to put the Rams up by 15 (74-59).

Cournoyer joined Rhodes and Mojidi in double digits scoring a career high 12 points on the night, including going 4-4 from the line.

Carrol led all scores with 16 points at the half, but Rhode Island held her to one basket in the second half. URI out rebounded Fordham 37-35 and caused 26 turnovers while only committing 14.

Rhode Island has one more road game at Charlotte before returning home to close out the regular season against Temple. The Rams tip-off with the 49ers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Halton Arena on Friday (Feb.24)
