Baseball Shuts Out Columbia, 6-0

LANTANA, Fla. - Rhode Island junior Steve Holmes scattered seven hits over eight innings while striking out 10 batters to lead the Rams to a 6-0 shutout of Columbia, Thursday, in Florida.

Rhode Island (7-3) senior second basemand Wayne Russo was 2-for-3 including a three-run homerun in the bottom of a seventh inning that saw the Rams break open a close games with four runs.

The Rams plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior first baseman Ryan Cunningham reached on a single and came all the way around to score after junior designated hitter Greg Allen reached third base on an error by the Columbia left fielder. An RBI ground out by senior catcher Josh Nestor made it a 2-0 game in favor of the Rams.

That was all the run support Holmes would need as he shut down Columbia through eight innings. Junior reliever James Norcott closed out the ninth inning, striking out one and inducing two ground-outs.
