KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island junior guard Safi Mojidi totaled a game-high 26 points to go along with six assists, while sophomore guard Amanda McGrew poured in a career-high 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting to lead the Rams (5-15, 3-3 A-10) to a 91-78 victory over Charlotte (14-7, 5-1 A-10) Friday night in Atlantic 10 women's basketball.
Rhody's 91 points was the highest total since it scored 105 points vs. Temple in Keaney Gymnasium on Feb. 20, 1996. It was also a new Ryan Center record.
Rhode Island shot a blistering 58.3 percent from the field, including 62.1 percent in the first half as five Rams scored in double-digits. Sophomore forward Jessica Magley added 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while senior guard Justine Boisvert and freshman guard Lindsay Harris each scored 10 points.
"We made some big shots and out-rebounded a much bigger team," said head coach Tom Garrick. "Hopefully we can get some more results like that. If our kids continue to play hard, we'll have more positive results than we do negative. We always talk about playing to the end, playing through mistakes and being consistent like we were tonight. It was good to see."
Trailing 5-4 at the 17:50 mark of the first half, a 12-2 Ram run finished off by a lay-up by Harris made the score, 16-7, with 12:44 on the clock. Rhody's lead would grow to as many as 15 after a 9-2 run capped by a Magley jumper made it a 38-23 game with 4:18 to play in the half. The 49ers would close to within nine at halftime, 45-36.
Rhode Island bumped its lead back up to double-digits, taking a 56-46 edge with 16:25 to play in the second half on a Mojidi lay-up. Charlotte would pull within six points with a 7-3 run to make the score 59-53 at the 14:17 mark, but the Rams would hold the 49ers to one field goal over the next 6:18, while putting together an 11-5 push to lead 70-58 with 7:43 to play. Charlotte never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
The Rams turned 20 Charlotte turnovers into 26 points for the game. They also made a season-high 35 field goals, while handing out a 25 assists, also a team-high for 2006-07. The Rams also won the rebounding battle, 35-32, including 10 by sophomore forward Sierra Cooper.
Charlotte finished the game shooting 45.5 percent as Sabrina Gregory totaled 16 points and eight assists, while Danielle Burgin was credited with 14 points and six rebounds.
Rhode Island will next face Saint Louis on Sunday at 2:00 in the Ryan Center in the second of four-straight home games.
