BOSTON - Despite double-figure performances from three different Rams, the Rhode Island women's basketball team suffered a 77-56 loss to Boston University, Tuesday night at Case Gym in Boston, Mass.
URI got off to a slow start, trailing BU, 24-13, midway through the first half despite early baskets by senior guard Safi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md.) and junior forward Tanja Licina (Belgrade, Serbia). Heading into halftime, the Terriers had the 42-24 advantage, but Mojidi led all scorers with 11 points.
After the break, BU stretched its lead to 25 but Rhody clawed its way back into the game as redshirt junior Crystal Bellinger (New York, N.Y.) capped of a 12-0 run for the Rams, cutting the Terriers' advantage to 11 with five minutes to go. That was as close as URI would get though, as BU held on for the 77-56 win.
Bellinger finished with a career-high 14 points and three assists - all in the second half - while Mojidi posted a team-best 15 points, including a 3-of-4 performance from three-point territory. Licina rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Rams with 12 points while junior Sierra Cooper (Blairs, Va.) led Rhody on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds in 21 minutes of action.
The Rams (1-1) return to action on Friday night, when they return to the Ryan Center for a 7 p.m. game against Siena.
