Nov. 28, 2007

Box Score

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Junior Amanda McGrew (Santa Monica, Calif.) recorded a game high 15 points and five steals as the Rhode Island women's basketball team posted a 74-57 win over Central Connecticut, Wednesday night at Detrick Gymnasium. Freshman Megan Shoniker (Rochester, N.Y.) finished with a career-high 11 points, including a 3-for-4 performance from beyond the arc.

Senior Whitney Hollis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) put the Rams on the board first but the two teams traded baskets, and the lead, through much of the first half. A trey by McGrew with 14:00 left on the clock gave Rhody its final advantage of the half as CCSU went on to lead by as many as eight and headed into the break with a 36-33 advantage.

The Rams return from halftime recharged and opened the second frame with a 21-9 run over the first 13 minutes to take a 64-45 lead. URI controlled things the rest of the way, denying the Blue Devils a win in their home-opener and improving to 4-3 on the season.

For the game, McGrerw (15), senior Safi Mojidi (13), Shoniker (11) and Hollis (11) all finished with double-digit totals in the scoring column, while sophomore Lindsay Harris (Upper Marlboro, Md.) turned in a team-high seven rebounds.

Cati Keating led CCSU with 13 points and two blocks. Danica Covington recorded a game-high 12 boards.

Rhody out-rebounded the Blue Devils, 42-34, and forced 23 CCSU turnovers while committing just 16.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, Dec. 1 when they host in-state rival Providence at 3 p.m.
