KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island junior guard Safi Mojidi scored a game-high 16 points, but it was Richmond (12-5, 6-6 A-10) taking a 70-56 decision this afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action. It was the Rams' final home game of the season.
Rhody senior Justine Boisvert (Glocester, R.I.), who was honored in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony, dished out a team-high five assists while scoring four points in her last appearance in the Ryan Center. Senior manager Jon Schupak (Warwick, R.I.) was also recognized prior to the game.
Richmond red shirt sophomore guard Joanna McKnight led for Spiders in double-figures, scoring 14 points while grabbing six rebounds, while freshman forward Nikita Thomas added 12 points and a team-best seven rebounds for Richmond.
The two teams started the game trading baskets and were tied, 13-13, at the 12:42 mark, before a 7-3 Richmond run gave the Spiders a 20-16 lead at 9:48. Trailing by five, 25-20, at 7:11, a 9-4 Ram run capped by a three-pointer by sophomore guard Amanda McGrew, tied the game back up, 29-29, with 3:28 to play in the half.
Richmond would finish the half on a 12-4 run to take a 41-33 into halftime. Both teams shot the ball well in the first half, with the Rams hitting 14-of-28 shots (50.0) while the Spiders connected on 15-of-33 (45.5) attempts. Richmond cashed in 12 URI turnovers for 12 points.
Richmond extended its lead to as many as 15 in the second half. Trailing, 57-42, with 10:37 to play, Mojidi hit a three-pointer and made a steal on the following Richmond possession that she laid in to cut the deficit to 10 points, 57-47, with 8:39 left in the game.
The Spiders would answer with five unanswered points to build its lead back to 15, 62-47, with 7:19 on the clock. A jumper by freshman guard Lindsay Harris, followed by a layup by sophomore forward Sierra Cooper, made the score 62-51 with 4:51 to play, but the Rams couldn't mount any comeback as the Spiders cruised to the 14-point win.
Richmond finished the game scoring 22 points off 19 URI turnovers, while winning the battle of the boards, 31-29.
The Rams player their final two games on the road, starting Thursday, Feb. 22, with a 7:00 p.m. tip at Saint Bonaventure. They finish off the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 25, with a 2:00 p.m. game at Xavier.
