Sept. 2, 2007

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island junior Thorunn Jonsdottir scored the lone goal for the Rams as the Rhode Island women's soccer team battled Maine to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Sunday afternoon at the URI Soccer Complex. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jackie Fede recorded three saves in net for URI.

Rhody took a 1-0 lead when senior Deb Nelson and junior Dora Larusdottir moved the ball to the front of the net where Jonsdottir snuck a shot between the legs of Maine goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips at the 42:26 mark.

The Rams controlled play through much of the second half and nearly held on for the win, but Maine forced overtime with an equalizer in the 88th minute. Kim Stephenson fed a pass to Hailey Blackburn who nailed the ball into the top left corner of the net for the 1-1 tie.

Despite outshooting the Black Bears, 7-2, through two ten-minute overtime periods, Rhody was unable to find the back of the net and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

In all, URI held an 8-5 corner kick advantage and outshot Maine, 21-13.

The Rams are back in action on Sept. 7, when they travel to West Virginia for a 7:00 p.m. match against the Mountaineers.
