Sept. 28, 2007

Box Score

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -- Deb Nelson and Dora Larusdottir each tallied two goals, as Rhode Island cruised past St. Bonaventure, 4-1, in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams.

For Nelson, it marks the sixth goal in the past three matches for the senior from Chepachet, R.I.

St. Bonaventure got on the scoreboard early in the first half (5:49), as Kristin Sotak scored on an open net, as Jackie Fede was taken out of the play, colliding with a Bonnies player.

But URI's offense would take over from there. Larusdottir tallied the equalizer in the 13th minute, as she found the back of the net on a ball that Bona goalkeeper Amanda Prestigiacomo could not handle. The score would go into the halftime break knotted at 1-1.

Nelson would score her first goal of the match in the 66th minute, finding a pass from Kristie Moltz and placing it in the back of the net. Less than nine minutes later, Nelson would again convert from a deft pass in the middle, this time from Thorunn Jonsdottir, to put the Rams up 3-1.

Jonsdottir scored the fourth goal at the 89:55 mark, blasting a shot up high, from about 18 yards out of the box.

The Rams outshot the Bonnies, 22-3, with Nelson (6), Jonsdottir (5) and Jessica Babice (5) leading the charge. They attempted six corner kicks to just one for the home team.

In goal, Jackie Fede played all 90:00, allowing one goal and making one save. Her counterpart, Amanda Prestigiacomo allowed four goals while making nine saves in 90:00 of action.

With the win, Rhode Island improves to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0 in A-10 action. Rhody returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 30 when they host Temple at the URI Soccer Complex at 1 p.m.
