RICHMOND, Va. - The Rhode Island women's basketball fell to Richmond, 68-38, Wednesday afternoon at the Robins Center in Richmond, Va. Senior
Whitney Hollis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Rams with eight points and three rebounds.
Richmond opened the game by outscoring Rhody 14-2 over the first five minutes but the Rams came back with a 11-2 run to get within three (16-13) with 10:29 to go. Brittani Shells went on to hit back-to-back baskets for the Spiders, increasing their lead to eight (23-15) with 6:41 remaining. URI would make just three more shots before the half, heading into the break down 34-20.
For the half, Richmond held a 28-10 rebounding advantage while Rhode Island shot 30% (9-30) from the field and made just one of seven three-point attempts.
Hollis scored six second-half points to lead the Rams, but Rhody was unable to get any closer than 14 points (45-31), and trailed by as many as 33 (68-35) down the stretch.
For the game, Richmond (12-12, 5-4 A-10) shot 51.8% (29-56) from the field while URI was 25.9% (15-58) from the field, including a 2-for-13 performance from beyond the arc. The Spiders also held a 47-24 advantage on the boards.
Johanna McKnight led all scorers with a game-high 16 points. Shells and Crystal Goring followed with 12 points each. Hollis and junior Amanda McGrew (Santa Monica, Calif.) tallied a team-high eight points each for the Rams.
With the loss, Rhody falls to 11-13 (4-5 A-10).
The Rams are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 17, when they return travel to Dayton for a 2 p.m. meeting with the Flyers.
