KINGSTON, R.I. -- Ashley Evangelista tallied her second goal in as many games, but it was not enough as Rhode Island dropped a 2-1 decision at hone to La Salle in an Atlantic 10 matchup.
Evangelista's second tally of the season came at the 62:01 mark off a well-placed pass into the box from Amanda Thomas. The freshman converted a header past Explorers' goalkeeper Melissa Sanger.
La Salle got on the scoreboard in the first half, as Melanie Gamble headed in a corner kick past URI goalkeeper Tara Murphy. The Explorers took a 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission. They outshot URI, 4-2, in the first 45:00 of play.
In the second half, both teams picked up the intensity. La Salle added another score in the 60th minute, as Erin Brennan took a throw-in pass from Gamble and managed to get her shot by Murphy from point-blank range. Evangelista's score for Rhode Island made it 2-1.
The two teams combined for 32 fouls, with the La Salle bench (67:10) and Gamble (69:17) whistled for yellow cards.
La Salle outshot URI, 10-6 - including a 6-4 edge in shots on-goal. Rhody attempted six corner kicks to La Salle's five.
Murphy made four saves in 84:14 of play in goal. Brooke Messier finished the game's final 5:46 and did not take on a shot. For the Explorers, Sanger made three stops.
Rhody returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 14 when they host Brown at 4:30 p.m. at the URI Soccer Complex.
