KINGSTON, R.I. - Freshman Ashley Rivera scored a game-high 24 points as the Rhode Island women's basketball team put up a 60-49 win over Brown on Wednesday night at the Ryan Center.
Rivera's 24 points were also a career-high as she knocked down five shots from long range for the third time this season. It also marked the seventh consecutive game she scored in double figures for the Rams.
Freshman Anisha Wilson also tallied double digits in the scoring column as she finished the night with 11 points, three assists and two steals.
Defensively, senior Lindsay Harris recorded a game-best eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks while also contributing six points.
Rhode Island (4-5) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as Rivera's third shot from beyond the arc put URI in front 16-6 with 12:34 remaining in the first half. The Rams and Bears traded baskets through the remainder of the frame but Rhody never let its lead slip below seven points and took a 13-point advantage (35-22) into the locker room.
Brown (3-7) opened the second half with an 11-2 run and trimmed the Rhode Island lead to four (37-33) over the opening five minutes but Rhody responded with a push of its own and limited the Bears to just a pair of free throws while building its lead back up to 12 (47-35) with 10 minutes left to play.
Brown rallied back once more as a layup by Sheila Dixon made it a five-point game (49-44) with 6:10 on the clock, but that was as close as the Bears would get as Rhody closed out the game with an 11-5 run to take the 60-49 victory.
Overall, URI outshot Brown (47.2%-28.1%) and held a 40-39 edge in rebounds.
The Bears were paced by Sarah Delk and Christina Johnson who netted 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Rhode Island returns to action this weekend when it travels to Queens, N.Y. for a 1:30 p.m. game at St. John's.
