Rams Drop 2-0 Decision to St. Bonaventure in A-10 Opener

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Rhode Island dropped its 2009 Atlantic 10 opener tonight, 2-0, at home against St. Bonaventure.

The Rams (2-5-1; 0-1 A-10) allowed two goals within a 2:28 span early in the first half. St. Bonaventure scored first at the 14:03 mark, beating URI goalkeeper on a breakaway on the left side, from about 10 yards out.

Shortly after, the Bonnies tallied their second goal on a putback in the bonx, on a rebound of a Murphy save.

Rhody attempted four shots over the final 10 minutes of the first half, three going wide while a Kaylen Shimoda attempt was stopped by Bona goalkeeper Nicole Markert. URI outshot SBU, 7-6 in the first half.

In the second half, URI had two solid scoring chances in the 63rd and 68th minutes. First, Alexis Veith put a low knuckler on goal, which SBU's Markert was able to stop. Kaylen Shimoda took a pinpoint pass from Stephanie Santos and attempted a header, but Markert was again able to convert the save.

For the game, Murphy made five saves in 90 minutes of play. Her counterpart Markert stopped six Rhody shots. URI outshot St. Bonaventure, 13-10 in the game, while the Bonnies had seven shots on-goal to Rhody's six. SBU also attempted six corner kicks, while committing 10 fouls.

Rhode Island returns to action on Sunday, when it travels to Philadelphia to take on Temple.
