KINGSTON, R.I - The Rhode Island women's basketball team fell to Richmond, 70-46, on Saturday night at the Robins Center. Junior Megan Shoniker was the lone Rams to score in double figures as she finished with 14 points on the night.
Defensively, Andrea Buck and Lara Gaspar recorded a game-best eight rebounds each while - as a team - Rhody held a 38-27 advantage on the glass. The Rams shot 40.5-percent on the night (17-of-42), but committed 34 turnovers - which led to 34 Richmond points.
Brittani Shells netted a game-high 20 points for the Spiders while Abby Oliver added 19. Oliver also led all players with four steals.
With the score tied at 4-4 after four minutes play, Richmond went on to tally 15 straight points over a 4:33 span to take a 19-4 lead with just under 12 minutes remaining in the half. Rhody responded with an 8-0 run of its own to make it a seven-point game (19-12) with 5:49 on the clock but Richmond outscored URI, 15-7, down the stretch to take a 32-16 lead into the break.
The Spiders maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half, not allowing Rhody to get any closer than 13 (42-29) after a Shoniker three-point play with 14:18 left in the game.
With the loss, Rhode Island drops to 9-16 overall (2-8 Atlantic 10). Richmond, meanwhile, improves to 16-8 overall and 5-4 in the league.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Philadelphia for a 7 p.m. game at Saint Joseph's. The game will be televised on CBS College Sports.
