Rhode Island Drops 2-1 Decision to Northeastern

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Kaylen Shimoda tallied her first goal of the season in Rhode Island's home opener versus Northeastern on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams (0-2-1) fell, 2-1, in a match that saw all the scoring occur in the first half of play.

Shimoda found the back of the net early on, taking an Adrienne Ruhe Lischke pass into the box in the third minute and converting it to the lower left corner, past NU goalkeeper Michelle Sopko.

The Huskies (2-1) tallied the equalizer in the 32nd minute, as Veronica Napoli converted a direct kick on the left side from about 30 yards out. In the 39th minute, Greta Samuelsdottir scored the eventual gamewinner, beating URI goalkeeper Sasha Reiber one-on-one.

In the second half, defense was prominent in a scoreless 45 minutes of action. The Rams (three on-goal) and Huskies (two on-goal) each attempted five shots, with NU attempting two corner kicks.

Both teams played a physical game, combining for 29 fouls, five yellow cards, and one red card.

Reiber made three saves on the afternoon for URI, while Sopko made five stops for Northeastern.

Rhode Island returns to action on Friday, Sept. 3 when it travels to Hempstead, N.Y. to face Hofstra. Gametime is 7 p.m. It is the first game of the Hofstra Invitational, as URI will take on St. John's on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.
