KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island women's basketball team returns to Kingston for its home opener vs. Maine on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off at the Ryan Center is set for 2 p.m.
SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS
Maine comes to Rhode Island after being edged, 53-48, in its season opener, Friday night at Central Connecticut. In that game, the Black Bears trailed by nine (27-18) at halftime before outscoring the Blue Devils (30-26) in the second frame. UMaine - which was picked to finish 9th in the America East preseason poll - is led by Ashleigh Roberts (16.0 ppg/6.0 rpg) and Brittany Williams (9.0 ppg/8.0 rpg).
INGLESE vs. MAINE
Third-year head coach Cathy Inglese has turned in a 11-12 all-time mark against Maine. As the head coach at Vermont, Inglese was 7-11 against the Black Bears before going 4-1 at Boston College.
RHODE WARRIORS
Rhode Island opens the 2011-12 season playing eight of its first 10 games on the road, including seven straight away games from Nov. 19-Dec. 4. The Rams will compete at home just twice in November and twice in December. Overall, Rhody's non-conference schedule consists of five home games and 10 contests away from the Ryan Center.
BOONE PICKS UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF
Junior Ajanae Boone, who was one of the Rams' most improved players in 2010-11, finished the season leading the team with a .375 three-point field goal percentage. In Rhody's season opener at Delaware, Boone posted a team-high 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Both are career highs for the Philadelphia native.
FRESHMEN MAKE IMPACT IN SEASON OPENER
Each of URI's five recruited freshmen - Marie Byrnes, Corinne Coia, Sydney Lewis, Megan Straumann and Teneka Whittaker - saw action in the Rams' season opener at Delaware. Coia (9p/6r), Lewis (10p/6r) and Whittaker (3p/1a/1s) each logged 20+ minutes and combined for 22 of the team's 53 points.
