KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior forward
Lara Gaspar had a team-high 10 points, but it was not enough as the Rhode Island women's basketball team (7-18; 1-10 Atlantic 10) dropped a 64-43 decision to Fordham (11-16; 3-8 Atlantic 10) Wednesday night at the Ryan Center.
Gaspar also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds en route to recording her third double-double on the year. Senior guard Megan Shoniker and junior guard Sherrie Session also chipped in with nine points apiece.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Rams went on a 7-2 run at the 10:14 mark to push their lead to 20-13 with 5:10 to go until the break.
Fordham fought back with a 13-4 run to take a 26-24 lead into the locker room. Rhody outshot the Rams 39.1-28.0 percent in the first half, but Fordham held a 26-24 edge on the glass. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc as they combined to shoot just 3-of-19 from 3-point range.
Session led all URI scorers with seven first-half points, connecting on 3-of-5 from the field.
Rhody re-claimed the lead at the 18:33 mark of the second half thanks to a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Ajanae Boone. Fordham came right back as it went on a 15-0 run to take a 41-27 lead with 13:32 remaining.
Fordham went on to increase its lead to 19 points with 4:01 to go as Rhody would not lead for the remainder of the game. URI shot just 32 percent from the floor in the second half as it was outscored 38-19.
