2012 Adams Cup of Newport - Final Results

 

Setting the Scene:

Course: Rounds 1 & 2 - Newport Country Club – Newport, R.I. (par 70/6,948 yards); Round 3 - Carnegie Abbey Golf Club - Portsmouth, R.I. (par 71/6,335 yards)

The field: 12 teams, 70 total golfers

Weather: First and Second Rounds - sunny, low 70s, moderate wind as day progressed
Third Round - overcast, gusty winds, low 70's

Rhode Island's Individual Results:

* Branden Chicorka finished the tournament in a tie for 7th place.  Chicorka closed out the tournament with a 74, for a 54-hole total of 219.  During the opening day of competition at Newport Country Club, the senior posted an opening round 69 and a second round 76.

* Jared Adams closed out the Adams Cup with his lowest round of the season - an even-par 71 - during Tuesday's final round.  Adams tied for 23rd place.  He posted a 76 during the first 18 holes of play before coming back with a 78 in the second round at Newport C.C.

* Nick Fairweather and Jeffrey Ray competed for Rhode Island as individuals.  Fairweather, in his first collegiate tournament, finished in 35th place (230) and improving in each of his three rounds.  After opening with a 78, he carded a 77 in the second round before firing a 75 in the third and final round.

Ray was one stroke behind Fairweather, in a tie for 36th place.  He sandwiched his second round 75 at Newport C.C. with a pair of 78's.

* Matt Goldman, another freshman competing as an individual, also closed out the tournament with his best showing.  The rookie shot 75 at Carnegie Abbey to close out with a final score of 239 (83-81-75).

* Andrew Fiorenzano finished in 60th place overall (72-79-89=240).  The junior started off the Adams Cup strong, posting scores of 72 and 79 during the opening day of competition.  

* Matt Montt finished in a tie for 63rd place (77-79-91=247), while Nick Celestino was 65th (87-79-83=249).  David Gosselin withdrew from the tournament due to injury.

* Yale's Sam Bernstein took individual honors, finishing with an even-par 211 (69-71-71).

Rhode Island Team Results:

* The Rams finished in ninth place, compiling a team score of 923 (294-312-317).

* On the team leaderboard, just one shot separated UCF (866) and Yale (867).  Johnson & Wales (Fla.) finished in third place (891).


What's Next:

Rhode Island heads to Bulls Bridge G.C. to play in the Hartford Hawks Invitational.
