Rhody Newcomers Set The Pace at MacDonald Cup

First Round Results - The MacDonald Cup (pdf)

Setting the Scene:

Course: Yale Golf Club – South Kent, Conn. (par 70/6,749 yards)

The field: 15 teams, 75 total golfers

Weather: sunny, low 60s, overcast

Rhode Island's Individual Results:

* Branden Chicorka and Nick Fairweather are tied at 19th place after Saturday's first round of play.  Both golfers carded a 1-over par 71, going out in an even-par 75, before closing the back nine with a 1-over 36.  For Fairweather, it was his lowest round as a collegiate golfer.  He has competed in all three events for URI in the fall.

* Fellow freshman Mat Goldman also posted his lowest round of his early collegiate career, with a first round 74.  Goldman closed strong, firing a 1-under par 34 on the back nine.  He is tied for 49th place overall, just three shots behind Chicorka and Fairweather.

* Andrew Fiorenzano is tied for 59th place, with a day one score of 75.  The junior was even through the front nine.

* Jared Adams rounded out the Rhody golfers in a tie for 70th place, with a first round 78.  Adams was 1-under par on the front nine.

* Central Connecticut's Monte Muller leads the individual scores with a 4-under 66 on Saturday.  His teammate Dan Fanion, along with Yale's Will Davenport, are tied for second, just one shot back.

Rhode Island Team Results:

* The Rams are tied for 10th place overall after day one, with total score of 291.  A tightly packed leaderboard, just 12 strokes separate the top 11 teams.

Quotable:

"We got a great day out of Nick Fairweather and walk-on Mat Goldman, neither of whom had ever played the golf course here at Yale.  Branden Chicorka is showing glimpses of really breaking out.  We still need consistency in the third and fourth spots to be where we need to be."
-- head coach Gregg Burke
