Rhode Island Holds Two-Stroke Lead After Day One of New England Championship

Setting the Scene:

Course: Newport National C.C. – Middletown, R.I. (par 72/7,244 yards)

The field: 10 teams, 50 total golfers

Weather: 50 degrees, partly cloudy, windy

Rhode Island's Individual Results:

* Jared Adams fired his low round of the Spring - an even-par 72 - to put him in third place overall after day one of the tournament.  Adams opened with a 35, and played a 37 on the back nine.

* Branden Chicorka sits just one stroke back, with a 1-over 73.  The senior and two-time A-10 Golfer of the Week honoree is in fourth place after 18 holes of play.

* Nick Fairweather and Andrew Fiorenzano each carded 75 during Saturday's round - putting them in a tie for 8th place.  The freshman Fairweather rallied on the back nine, shooting an even-par 36.  Fiorenzano opened his round strong, going 1-under through the first nine holes (35).

* Jeffrey Ray sits in a tie for 16th place, with an opening round 77 - his second-lowest round of the Spring season.

* UConn's Zack Zaback fired a 6-under 66 on Saturday, carding a 31 on the tough back nine at Newport National.

Rhode Island Team Results:

* The Rams sits in first place, with a total score of 295.  UConn (297), and Hartford (300) are within striking distance.  Bryant (308) and Central Connecticut/Fordham (309) round out the top five on the team leaderboard.

What's Next:

Rhode Island plays the second and final round of the New England Championship tomorrow - Sunday, April 14 - at the Newport National G.C. in Middletown, R.I.  Tee times begin at 10 a.m., with Rhode Island, UConn, and Hartford in the opening group.
