Rhode Island Finishes Second at New England Division I Championship

Setting the Scene:

Course: Newport National C.C. – Middletown, R.I. (par 72/7,244 yards)

The field: 10 teams, 50 total golfers

Weather: 53 degrees, partly cloudy, windy

Rhode Island's Individual Results:

* Andrew Fiorenzano (75-73=148) had his best finish of the year, tying for fifth place overall at the New England Championship.  Fiorenzano carded a 1-over 73 during Sunday's final round, marking his low round of the Spring season.  He improved by two strokes over his opening round 75 on Saturday during the first day of play.

* Branden Chicorka (73-75=148) recorded his third straight top five finish of the Spring, registering a 75 during the final day of play at Newport National G.C.  The senior opened up tourney play with a 1-over par 73.  He has finished in the top eight of all but one tournament in which he has played this year.

* Jared Adams (72-77=149) finished in a tie for eighth place - his best finish of the year and second-best finish of his Rhody career (t7th, 2012 New England Championship).  The junior fired a final round 77 on Sunday after opening with his round of the Spring - an even-par 72 - to put him in third place overall after day one of the tournament.  

* Nick Fairweather (75-80=155) tied for 24th place, following up his opening day 75 with a score of 80 on Sunday.  

* Jeffrey Ray (77-80=157) finished in a tie for 28th place.  After an opening round 77 - his second-lowest round of the Spring season, Ray finished off the tournament with a score of 80.

* UConn's Zack Zaback took top honors - winning the Joseph Prisco Award for individual medallist - after a 5-under total of 139.  He shot a 1-over par 73 on Sunday after firing a 6-under 66 on Saturday, carding a 31 on the tough back nine at Newport National.

Rhode Island Team Results:

* The Rams finished in second place, with a total score of 600.  URI combined for a score of 305 during Sunday's final 18 holes of play.  On Saturday, Rhody opened with a 295 - the best team score of the spring.

UConn (297-291=588) won the tournament.  Hartford (300-302=602) was third, Bryant (308-299=607) fourth, and Central Connecticut (309-304=613) rounded out the top five on the team leaderboard.

What's Next:

Rhode Island travels to the Century C.C. in Purchase, N.Y. to compete in the Century Intercollegiate on April 20-21.  It is the final regular season match for URI before the Atlantic 10 Championship (April 25-28).
