KINGSTON, R.I.
– Rhode Island's Varsity 8+ notched one of the biggest win in program history, defeating Dartmouth for the first time in school history Saturday morning. The Rams also beat Rutgers in the three-time race.

With choppy water causing issues for all three boats, the start was delayed as each time had to bail water at the starting line. Dartmouth and Rhode Island were even at the 500 meter mark, but then Dartmouth pulled ahead by a 5-seat advantage at the midpoint of the race.

However, in the final 700 meters, Rhode Island battled back, leading to a dogfight down the stretch. With a strong finish, the Rhody team of Kris Hudak (cox), Anne Mulholland, Ari Wakeman, Kari Tomeny, Lindsay Stephenson, Marisa Landry, Lotte Sherman, Kate Capistran and Anne Edwards surged in front just before the finish line, beating Dartmouth by 2.98 seconds.

"We tuned into Kris (Hudak), our cox, and we were able to make a move," said Mulholland, who rowed from the stroke seat. "We rowed at our pace, stayed calm and were able to push through."

"This was a huge win for us," said Rhode Island head coach Shelagh Donohoe. "Not just in terms of the win-loss, but because of the way we executed. In these conditions, we accomplished what we had worked on all week."

Rhode Island also won the Varsity 4A+, coming from behind to defeat Dartmouth by nearly 10 seconds. The team of Avery Cohen (cox), Siobhan Norton, Alyssa Goley, Jess Bergen and Michelle Forte took advantage when Dartmouth caught a crab midway through the race. The Rams pulled away in the final 500 meters.

BOAT DEDICATION

Two pairs boats were dedicated in a special ceremony at the URI Campanella Rowing Center after the races. One of the boats will be named for longtime Rhode Island Coordinator for Advising Programs Winkle Kelley. The second boat was named Penny 2001 by the Hofman family, who are supporters of the rowing program. Mackenzie Hofman, a former cox for the Rams, explained that as a youth, she had been the voice of the TD Bank penny arcade, hence the name Penny 2001.
