KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island won its ninth straight Resolute Cup as the Rams capped off a festive Senior Day by beating Boston College and Boston University in the Varsity 8 race Saturday morning.
Racing in a slack tide on the Narrow River, the Varsity 8 was the final race of the day in Rhody's lone home event of the season. Boat members Avery Cohen (cox), Hannah Milam, Alicia Kelley, Kate Capistran, Marisa Landry, Allison Zolnowsky, Dana Holland, Lily Herberger and Chloe Beach put up a time of 7:05.8, edging BC by 3.5 seconds. BU was third in time of 7:15.0.
The other races raced with a decreasingly outgoing tide and faced gusty quartering head winds that reached as high as 11 miles per hour.
The Second Varsity 8 race was a tight battle, as all three boats finished within 3.1 seconds of each other. Boston University (7:24.5) nipped Rhode Island by just 2.2 seconds, while the Rams held off BC by 0.9 seconds.
Following the races, eight Rhode Island seniors were honored by the team. Chloe Beach, Jess Bergen, Kate Capistran, Mary Estrada Madden, Michelle Forte, Sophia Labeko, Hannah Milam and Allison Zolnowksi all rowed in their final competition on the Narrow River for the Rams. The group is not done, though, as next week it will lead Rhody in search of its third Atlantic 10 championship in three seasons at the conference event in Camden, N.J. next Saturday.
