How It Happened
It was an even-played first half, where both teams had several scoring opportunities. In the 43rd minute, Jennifer Mencos made a great shot on a set piece at the top of the box. Rachael Lieberman had a chance to convert the rebound off of UMass GK Cassidy Babin but the shot went wide. Two minutes earlier, the Minutewomen had two point-blank chances at a goal but Katie Nickles converted both saves.
In the second half, both teams played an even 45:00 - with the Rams and Minutewomen each attempting eight shots. URI put five shots on-goal to UMass' two as the match went into the extra period.
Going into overtime play, Massachusetts outshot Rhode Island six to four. The score would remain tied until the end of the two overtime periods, 1-1.
