How It Happened
Early offensive struggles doomed Rhode Island in a 61-49 loss to VCU Wednesday night.
 
With both teams struggling from the perimeter (combined 2-for-19 from 3-point range in the first half), it was VCU that managed to get some offense going in the first 20 minutes. Behind the play of freshman Tera Reed, VCU opened a 32-15 lead by halftime. Reed had 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor.

Freshman Maia Moffitt got the Rams going in the third quarter when she made back-to-back 3-pointers. Rhode Island outscored VCU 20-14 in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to 11 points at 46-35 entering the final period.

VCU was able to fend off any serious rally thoughts, outscoring Rhody 15-14 in the final quarter. The visiting Rams earned their first conference win of the season.

• Sophomore Nicole Jorgensen just missed her third double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds. She was 7-of-11 from the floor and also had a career-high four steals.
• Freshman Maia Moffitt continued to show progression, scoring 11 points. Most of her damage came from outside, as she was 3-for-5 from 3-point range.
• After going 0-for-11 from the arc in the first half, Rhode Island was 5-for-11 after the break.
