How it Happened
A slow start to each half hurt Rhode Island as the Rams (0-1) opened their season with a 76-50 loss to in-state rival Providence Saturday afternoon.

Providence (1-1) started the game on an 11-0 run, hitting 3-of-4 from 3-point range during the spurt. Despite the slow start, Rhode Island warmed up late in the first quarter, hitting five of its final seven field goal attempts and close the gap to eight points by the end of the period.

The momentum carried over to the second quarter, as a 7-0 run got the Rams back into the game. A 3-pointer from Catherine Cairns and back-to-back layups by Marie-Paule Foppossi fueled the run. Eventually, a basket from Yanni Hendley pulled Rhody within two points at 32-30, but a 9-2 PC run pushed the lead back to nine points before the half.

The second half belonged to Providence. The Friars held Rhody without a field goal for the final 5:30 of the quarter, using a 16-2 run to establish a 21-point lead through three quarters, effectively putting the game away.
