How it Happened
Rhode Island (3-5, 3-2 Atlantic 10) dominated the paint on both ends of the floor en route to its third win in four games, knocking off Davidson, 62-44, Sunday afternoon.
Davidson used its perimeter shooting to jump out to the early lead. The Wildcats began 3-of-5 from deep as it established a 15-6 lead. Rhode Island responded with a 9-0 run that featured baskets from four different players. By the end of the quarter, it was a two-point game, with Davidson up, 17-15.
It was all Rhody to start the second quarter, as the Rams opened with a 10-3 run. The balance continued, as five different players scored during the run. The defense held Davidson (6-5, 3-2 A-10) to just 25 percent from the field in the quarter.
The second half saw Rhode Island scored the first 12 points, with
Johanna Muzet and
Marie-Paule Foppossi each scoring five points in the run. When Foppossi drove coast-to-coast for a layup, it put the Rams up, 43-25, the team's largest lead of the season. After Davidson scored five straight points to stem the momentum, URI called a timeout. On the ensuing possession, the Rams outworked Davidson, getting four consecutive offensive rebounds before Muzet hit a jumper to make the score 45-30.
The lead got to as many as 20 points following a
Catherine Cairns 3-point shot with 3:15 to go. The Rams coasted in the final minutes, getting above .500 in league play for the first time this season.
