KINGSTON, R.I. – The Rhode Island women's basketball team will end its pause of team activities after it was determined that multiple positive COVID-19 tests were deemed to be false positives, it was announced Wednesday.
Rhode Island will resume activities and return to competition with a home game against St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Jan. 23. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the Ryan Center.
The Bonnies – who play at Fordham Friday afternoon – were scheduled to play at Davidson on Sunday. That contest was postponed because Davidson is currently in a COVID-related pause.
"We are following the recommendations of medical experts whose decisions have the well-being of our student-athletes, staff and greater community at the forefront," Rhode Island Athletic Director
Thorr Bjorn said. "We are dealing with unprecedented scenarios, and we will continue to do so while taking an abundance of caution. While there is difficulty with the schedule changes, the overriding feeling is relief that everyone in the program has passed all required protocols and has been deemed healthy and able to resume athletic activities."
Rhode Island won at Richmond on Jan. 15. Following the game, team members were tested at a clinic in Virginia. Several of the results came back as inconclusive on Jan. 16, and in accordance with COVID protocols, those tests were treated as positive results.
The team's game at VCU on Jan. 17 was subsequently postponed, and URI was bused back to Rhode Island.
Since returning home, all team members have been tested multiple times, with zero positive results for COVID-19. At no point have any members of the women's basketball program shown any symptoms. There also have been zero positive tests for the members of the Richmond women's program since the game on Jan. 15.
The test results that were obtained in Virginia on Jan. 16 have been deemed false positives by the University's medical experts, clearing the way for a return to all basketball activities.
