How it Happened
Freshman
Hope Santaniello's first career goal proved to be the difference as Rhode Island rallied to knock off Fordham 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
With the match tied 1-1 through 85 minutes,
Brooke Cavino settled the ball and fed Santaniello in the top right corner of the box. Santaniello fired a bullet to the upper right corner to beat keeper Serena Mensah.
Fordham was on the scoreboard first when a scrum in front of URI keeper
Faith Hutchins resulted in Schae Groton slipping a header to the right side of the net. Rhode Island got the equalizer just four minutes later off of a corner kick.
Alyssa Fleming lofted a perfectly targeted ball toward Cavino, who headed the ball under a diving Mensah into the lower left corner.
With the victory, Rhode Island now has three Atlantic 10 victories for the first time since 2016.
