How it Happened
In a low-scoring game, Rhode Island escaped with a win over Maine at the Augusta Civic Center Sunday afternoon for its second straight victory.

The Rams (9-3) jumped to a 5-0 start that forced a Maine timeout early in the first. Sloppy play got the best of both teams, as both Rhode Island and Maine combined for four turnovers to close out the quarter. Despite the miscues, the Rams held on to their 12-8 lead. The turnovers continued to start the second, and the errors caught up to Rhody. The Black Bears scored seven points off the Ram's seven miscues in the first half of play.

Maine (2-7) used a 5-0 run to get ahead by as many as four points, but the Rams connected on two straight baskets to regain the lead (21-20). Maine answered with an Anne Simon jumper to get back on top, but a knock-down by Dolly Cairns closed out the quarter to send the Rams into the break on top, 23-22.

A Rebecca Demeke 3-pointer put the Rams up 28-24 in the opening minutes of the third. The Black Bears answered with two straight baskets from Simon to tie it at 30,  but Marie-Paule Foppossi hit a layup to put the Rams ahead by two going into the final period of play.

Rhody went on a 6-0 run that started with a classic three-point play by Chanell Williams and was capped by a Dolly Cairns 3-pointer to build a 40-33 lead. But the Black Bears battled back, scoring on two straight turnovers by the Rams to make it a one-point game (40-39). A 3-pointer by Simon tied it at 42, but Williams answered with a jumper to go up two. The final minute of the game saw the teams trading free throws, and the Rams were able to hold the Black Bears to without a field goal in their final two possessions. A trey by Caroline Bornemann couldn't fall in the final second of the game to send the Rams home with the win.
