How it Happened
Rhode Island's six-game win streak was snapped as Fordham rallied to edge URI, 56-53, in a back-and-forth contest Sunday afternoon.
Rhody (8-6, 8-3 Atlantic 10) trailed by one point entering the final quarter, but it scored the first six points of the frame to take a 46-41 lead after an
Emmanuelle Tahane layup.
Fordham (10-3, 7-2 A-10) responded with a 7-0 run of its own, pulling ahead 48-46 on a 3-pointer by Anna DeWolfe, the A-10's leading scorer. Rhody came right back with a Tahane free throw and a 3-pointer by
Marta Vargas following a steal by
Yanni Hendley, putting URI up by two with 3:33 to go.
Â
Fordham's Kendell Heremaia drove and had her shot blocked by Tahane. However, she got her own rebound and scored the second chance basket to tie the score. After a defensive stop for Fordham, Heremaia hit a pair of free throws to put Fordham up, 52-50, with 1:25 left. Rhode Island came up empty on its next trip, and DeWolfe made two free throws to stretch the lead to four points for Fordham with 12 seconds left.
Johanna Muzet hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to pull Rhody back within one point. Fordham's Kaitlyn Downey knocked down a pair of free throws with 1.7 to make the score 56-53, and a last second attempts at a deep 3-pointer by Vargas was short as Fordham held on.
