Rams Come Up Short at St. John's

How It Happened
A first inning plagued by errors, walks and a hit batsman led to a four-run deficit that Rhode Island never recovered from in a 12-3 loss at St. John's Friday.

After Elyse Morris led off the first with a single, the Red Storm (1-0) loaded the bases with one out via a walk to Marissa Rizzi and an error that allowed Peyton Cody to reach. Kaitlin Mattera was hit by a pitch, forcing in Morris. A walk to Kalei Sorensen brought in Rizzi with the second run. Gabriella Conca reach on the second error of the frame, bringing Cody home. A sacrifice fly by Amelia Ditolvo plated Mattera to make the score 4-0 despite St. John's having one single in the inning.

Rhode Island (0-2) managed to cut the lead in half in the top of the second inning. Susan Harrison drew a leadoff walk, and Ainsley Yoshhizumi was hit by a pitch. Cassie Swenson reached on a fielder's choice when Harrison was forced out at third on a ground ball. Sami Villarreal walked to load the bases, and Abby Fenbert lofted a sacrifice fly to drive in Yoshizumi. Ari Castillo followed with a single to reload the bases, and Erica Robles was plunked to force home Swenson, getting the Rams back within 4-2.

St. John's created more distance with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. A three-run home run by Cody was the big blow, as all of the Red Storm scoring came after there were two outs.

A solo home run by Robles got one run back for Rhode Island in the top of the fifth. However, Cody ended the game with her second home run of the day, a two-run shot that made the score 12-3, putting the eight-run rule into affect.
