Rams Power Way to Win in Season Finale

How It Happened
Rhode Island ended the season on a high note, powering its way to an 11-5 win at Massachusetts Sunday afternoon.

Rhode Island (5-22, 2-12 Atlantic 10) had four home runs, three triples and two doubles as part of a 14-hit attack. The Rams trailed 4-3 after four innings, but they rallied for eight runs over the final three innings.

It started in the top of the fifth. Abby Fenbert doubled and was on third base with two down when Erica Robles drilled a two-run home run to center, putting URI in front, 5-4.

An inning later, Cassie Swenson walked, then she sparked the team with a hustle play when she made it around to third on a sacrifice bunt by Susan Harrison. Caileigh Holland followed with a triple to right center to drive Swenson in. Ari Castillo later singled Holland in.

Rhody led 7-5 after six innings before a power surge put the game away. With pinch runner Ainsley Yoshizumi on first, Alex Pleasic lined a homer to right center. One out later, Susan Harrison launched a moon shot to dead center. With two outs, Skyler Rapuano lofted the third URI homer of the inning down the left field line to cap the scoring.

Inside the Box Score
  • A special moment happened in the sixth inning. Redshirt senior Erika Yeager appeared as a pinch runner at first base. Yeager, who started every game she played the previous four seasons, had not played this season due to an injury suffered in preseason.
  • Yeager walked out to first base, then the starter immediately re-entered, and Yeager returned to the dugout as her teammates greeted her with hugs and cheers.
  • Erica Robles' second home run of the series was the 13th of her career. She finished her career in a three-way tie for eighth in program history with Kellie Cookus (1996-98) and Paige Julich (2015-18).
  • Hannah DeSousa had two hits and finished her career sixth in program history with a .309 batting average.
  • Sophomore Skyler Rapuano had a homer, triple and single. She also scored three runs.
  • Alex Pleasic hit a homer, singled and drove in three runs.
  • Abby Fenbert doubled and scored a run.
  • Caleigh Holland tripled, singled and drove in a run.
  • Emily Spingarn earned her first career victory with 4.1 innings of relief. She allowed just four hits and one earned run.
