How it Happened
A contrast of styles saw Rhode Island (18-3, 8-0 Atlantic 10) win at La Salle 66-60 for its program-record 11th straight victory Sunday.
The Rams survived the outside shooting of La Salle (12-10, 5-5 A-10), which made a season-high 14 3-point baskets. Of the 60 points for the Explorers, 52 came from either beyond the arc or at the free throw line. Rhode Island, on the other hand, scored 40 of its 64 points in the paint.
Rhode Island trailed 54-53 with less than five minutes to go in regulation. After a defensive stop,
Dez Elmore hit a wild jumper from the top of the key as the shot clock expired to give URI a 55-54 lead. The Explorers came up empty on their next possession, and
Emmanuelle Tahane hit a layup to make it a three-point contest
La Salle came back with a Claire Jacobs 3-pointer to tie the game, but
Dolly Cairns matched it with a trey of her own. The Explorers would not go away, as Molly Masciantonio drained yet another 3-pointer to tie the game, 60-60.
Cairns hit an elbow jumper to once again give URI the lead, 62-60. With 26 seconds left,
Chanell Williams got a steal and drove the length of the court for a layup to make it a two-possession game. Williams got another steal on the next La Salle possession led to an Elmore layup to extend the lead to six points, essentially sealing the win.Â
