Rams Shut Out by Dayton in Series Finale

How It Happened
A pitcher's duel went Dayton's way as the Flyers blanked Rhode Island 3-0 Thursday in the finale of a three-game series.

The visiting Flyers (6-12, 1-2 Atlantic 10) scored single runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings. An RBI double by Quinn Pallardy in the second, a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Cacini in the fifth and a solo home run by Emma Schutter in the seventh provided all of the scoring in the game.

Rhode Island (5-12, 1-2 A-10) managed three hits and a pair of walks off pitcher Kelsey Gumm (2-4). However, Gumm did not allow a runner past second base while going the distance for the win.

Inside the Box Score
  • Rhode Island had runners on base in five of the seven innings.
  • Junior Cassie Swenson had URI's lone extra base hit, a double.
  • Junior Skyler Rapuano and sophomore Maddie Melice each singled once.
  • Rapuano also stole a base.
  • Freshman Cameron Whiteford pitched 3.0 solid innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits.
  • Whiteford entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth inning. She minimized the damage, allowing just one inherited runner to score to keep the Rams close.
What's Next
Rhode Island will play a doubleheader against Massachusetts on Sunday, with the first game scheduled for noon. The series initially was supposed to begin Saturday, but the schedule was altered due to expected rain all day Saturday.
