How It Happened
Rhode Island split a pair of games on the second day of the Spring Games, powering past Georgetown 6-4 before losing a 1-0 contest to Georgia Southern. The Rams (4-10) have allowed just eight runs in four games at the Spring Games, despite going 1-3 over the first two days.
Game 1 – Rhode Island 6, Georgetown 4
Sophomore Vicki Viaclovski drilled a three-run home run and Rhode Island held on to knock off Georgetown (8-9) in its first game of the day.
After the Hoyas got a run in the bottom of the first, URI took its first lead in the third. With two outs,
Skyler Rapuano walked and scored on a
Cassie Swenson double.
Sami Villarreal followed with a double of her own to bring Swenson around for a 2-1 lead. An inning later,
Susan Harrison led off with a walk and
Rachel Zingerman followed with a single. Viaclovski lofted a three-run shot to make it a 5-1 score.
Georgetown got a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to get within one run heading into the final innings. URI got an insurance run in the top of the inning.
Jessica Hennelly pinch hit and drew a walk.
Leilyn Alvarez came on to run and eventually scored on a Rapuano single.
Game 2 – Georgia Southern 1, Rhode Island 0
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Aniston Johnson singled and Jani Conklin followed with a double that brought Johnson all the way around. Meanwhile Georgia Southern (5-8) got a complete-game effort from Rylee Waldrep, who limited the Rams to three singles en route to the win.
Inside the Box Scores
- Senior Sami Villarreal was 3-for-6 with a double, two singles, one walk and one RBI on the day.
- Sophomore Vicki Viaclovski's three-run home run was the team's third long ball of the season.
- Junior Piper Maguire (1-2) got her first win of the season against Georgetown. She pitched 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits.
- Junior Liz Lynchard got the save against the Hoyas.
- Freshman Cameron Whiteford gave the team 2.0 innings of hitless, scoreless relief against Georgia Southern.
- As a team, Rhode Island lowered its earned run average to 4.21.
