How It Happened
George Washington hit .261 as a team as it handed Rhode Island a 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-15, 25-18) defeat Sunday afternoon.
Set One - George Washington 25, Rhode Island 16
S Stewart and E Derlling each had three kills to lead George Washington to an early one-set lead. While the Revolutionaries hit .250 as a team, Rhode Island hit -0.032 in the first set, picking up nine kills. Unfortunately, the Rams also had 10 attack errors. GW never trailed in the first set.
Set Two – Rhode Island 25, George Washington 20
The Rams played a more sound set, hitting .207 while committing just four attack errors. After jumping out to a 15-7 lead, Rhody kept GW at arm's length the rest of the way. Though the Revolutionaries got within three points at 17-14, 18-15, and 22-19, but URI did not break.
Chloe Abuto and
Emma Vente each had three kills to spark the offense.
Set Three - George Washington 25, Rhode Island 15
GW jumped out to a 15-10 lead before the Rams scored three straight points behind a kill from
Aerin Bowman and back-to-back
Madi Disu kills. However, the Revolutionaries responded with five unanswered points for a commanding 20-13 lead. The set ended with a URI service error followed by back-to-back attack errors.
Set Four - George Washington 25, Rhode Island 18
The teams split the first 22 points of the set before George Washington gained some traction. A 4-0 spurt that included three straight Liv Womble kills put the Revolutionaries up 15-11, and they never relinquished the lead. Rhody managed to get within two a pair of times, but GW stayed in control and coasted down the stretch to complete the weekend sweep.
Inside the Box Score
- Freshman Chloe Abuto led the offense with a career-high eight kills.
- She had just one attack error in 11 attempts. Abuto recorded 12 kills and had just two errors for the weekend.
- Graduate student Gabrielle Shilling had seven kills and two blocks in two sets.
- Sophomore Hope Passerello had 19 assists and five digs, while junior Katie Butler had 14 assists and eight digs.
- Junior Hannah Blaney had 13 digs to lead URI.
