Offense Stymied in Loss to San Jose State

How It Happened
Rhode Island could not solve pitcher Jenessa Ullegue, as the San Jose State starter struck out 13 batters while leading her team to a 3-1 win over the Rams Saturday night.

The 2019 Mountain West Pitcher of the Year, Ullegue struck out at least one batter in every inning. She fanned the side in in the second and had two in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Rhode Island (2-12) managed to get back-to-back doubles from Cassie Swenson and Jessica Hennelly in a span of four pitches in the fifth inning. That led to Rhody's lone run of the game, as URI could not muster much offense on the night.

San Jose State (9-14) got a run-scoring single from Adrianna Noriega in the first inning, an RBI single from Jessican Giacoma in the second and an unearned run in the fourth to knock off Rhody for the second time in as many days.

Inside the Box Score
  • All three of Rhode island's hits were doubles, which came off the bats of seniors Rachel Zingerman, Cassie Swenson and Jessica Hennelly.
  • Swenson scored URI's lone run, while Hennelly had the team's RBI.
  • The 13 strikeouts were a season high for the Rhody offense. The Rams' previous high was seven, which happened twice.
  • All nine starters fanned at least once.
  • Entering the game, Rhode Island had struck out an average of just 3.5 times per game.
  • Freshman Kylie Bulinski and junior Vicki Viaclovsky each walked once.
  • Senior Liz Lynchard (2-4) had a strong outing in a losing effort. She pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and just two earned runs.
