Sophomore
Katie Zaun delivered a dominant start in the circle and Rhode Island won at in-state rival Providence 4-1 Wednesday afternoon.
Zaun pitched 6.1 innings overall, allowing just two singles and a pair of walks.
Rhode Island (7-17) took advantage of a Friar error in the first inning when
Hannah Hernandez reached on a throwing error.
Rachel Zingerman followed with a double down the left field line that brought Hernandez all the way around to score.
Providence (9-18) evened things up with a run in the second. Ryanne Haynes was hit by a pitch and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A single through the right side by Geanice Morales drove in Hayes to tie the score. The Rhody defense got Morales out trying to advance to second on the play.
A two-out rally in the third inning helped Rhody pad the lead. Zingerman drew a walk and promptly stole second. A wild pitch allowed her to reach third.
Skyler Rapuano drew a walk. On the play, she continued to second and drew a throw, helping the Rams execute a double steal, with Zingerman scoring on the play.
Kylie Bulinski singled to left center to drive Rapuano in for a 3-1 lead.
Freshman Becca Zawiskowski led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to left field to extend the lead to three runs.
Providence threatened in the bottom of the sixth. The Friars loaded the bases against
Liz Lynchard with a hit batter and two walks. Zaun re-entered the game and on her first pitch retired Haynes on a flyout to centerfield to end the Â

- Freshman Kylie Bulinksi singled and drove in a run. She also was robbed of a second hit on a diving catch by Providence centerfielder Gabrielle Sebastian.
- Freshman Annabeth Carlberg made her collegiate debut, appearing as a pinch hitter.

Rhode Island hosts another in-state rival Thursday when Brown comes to town for a doubleheader. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
