Rhode Island Defeats Providence, 4-1

How It Happened
Sophomore Katie Zaun delivered a dominant start in the circle and Rhode Island won at in-state rival Providence 4-1 Wednesday afternoon.

Zaun pitched 6.1 innings overall, allowing just two singles and a pair of walks.

Rhode Island (7-17) took advantage of a Friar error in the first inning when Hannah Hernandez reached on a throwing error. Rachel Zingerman followed with a double down the left field line that brought Hernandez all the way around to score.

Providence (9-18) evened things up with a run in the second. Ryanne Haynes was hit by a pitch and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A single through the right side by Geanice Morales drove in Hayes to tie the score. The Rhody defense got Morales out trying to advance to second on the play.

A two-out rally in the third inning helped Rhody pad the lead. Zingerman drew a walk and promptly stole second. A wild pitch allowed her to reach third. Skyler Rapuano drew a walk. On the play, she continued to second and drew a throw, helping the Rams execute a double steal, with Zingerman scoring on the play. Kylie Bulinski singled to left center to drive Rapuano in for a 3-1 lead.

Freshman Becca Zawiskowski led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to left field to extend the lead to three runs.

Providence threatened in the bottom of the sixth. The Friars loaded the bases against Liz Lynchard with a hit batter and two walks. Zaun re-entered the game and on her first pitch retired Haynes on a flyout to centerfield to end the
