How It Happened
A back-and-forth contest did not go Rhode Island's way as the Rams fell 4-3 to powerful USC-Upstate Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Bulls Invitational in Tamp, Fla.
The freshman duo of
Kylie Bulinski and
Casey Miller gave the Rams an early lead. Miller led off the game with an infield singled. After the next two batters were retired, Bulinski launched a two-run home run to left center to put Rhode Island up 2-0.
Casey Goguts helped USC-Upstate (18-2) rally. She had a solo home run in the bottom of the second and then an RBI single in the third that gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead.
URI (2-8) knotted the score in the top of the fourth when Miller drove in
Maddie Melice with a groundout. An error on the play allowed Miller to reach, but the Rams did not get any more runs across.
USC-Upstate regained the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth. S Johnson reached on a one-out double. With two down, C Norris reached on an error that allowed Johnson to come around from second and make the score 4-3.
Rhode Island got a runner into scoring position in the sixth when
Leilyn Alvarez reached on an error and stole second base. However, a pop up and strikeout ended the threat.
