How It Happened
Rhode Island (16-20) split a pair of one-run games with Stonehill Wednesday, defeating the Skyhawks 4-3 in extra innings before falling 1-0 in the second game.
Game 1 - Rhode Island 4, Stonehill 3 (8 inn.)
The Rams rallied from a pair of late one-run deficits to pull out the walk-off victory in the opener. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning,
Jessica Hennelly drove in
Rachel Zingerman with a one-out single to right field to tie the game.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Stonehill pushed a run across in the top of the eight. With the inning starting with a runner on second, Megan Wells scored on a groundout by Shannon Conte to put the Skyhawks up, 3-2.
In the bottom of the inning, Rhode Island opened with
Elena Gonzalez on second base. Zingerman sacrificed her to third.
Skyler Rapuano brought her in with a double to the gap in left center. Hennelly came through again, lining a single to right that allowed Rapuano to slide in ahead of the throw for the walk-off win.
Game 2 - Stonehill 1, Rhode Island 0
Stonehill (2-29) got a dominant outing from pitcher Kelly Mayette, who limited the Rams to two hits over seven shutout innings. After
Hannah Hernandez singled to start the third inning, Rhody did not get another hit until the final frame.
In the top of the second, Alyssa Grossi drew a two-out walk. Megan Weis followed with a line drive triple down the right field line that brought Grossi all the way around.
That was enough for Mayette, who kept the Rams at bay. In the sixth inning, Rhody got
Hannah Hernandez to third base with one out, but she was thrown out at home trying to score on a fly ball off the bat of
Elena Gonzalez. In the final at bat, URI got a one-out double from
Skyler Rapuano, but a pair of ground outs brought the game to an end, snapping Rhode Island's five-game winning streak.
