Rams Earn Doubleheader Split With Hawks

How It Happened
Rhode Island and Saint Joseph's took turns shutting each other out as they split an Atlantic 10 doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Rams (10-18, 4-4 Atlantic 10) snapped a 20-game losing streak to the Hawks (12-16, 4-4 A-10) by taking the second game.

Game 1 - Saint Joseph's 5, Rhode Island 0
Saint Joseph's broke a scoreless game in the top of the fourth, executing a squeeze play to produce the first run. After Meghan Snkus and Kaelin Cash hit back-to-back doubles to get two runners in scoring position, Jessica Gaughan dropped a bunt to bring Sinkus in. The Hawks added three in the sixth and one in the seventh to put the game away.

Game 2 - Rhode Island 2, Saint Joseph's 0
Katie Zaun pitched her second complete-game shutout of the season to lead the Rams to a win in the second game. Rhody scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to make sure the strong performance held up.

With one out in the home half of the sixth, Casey Miller reached on an infield and moved to second when Elena Gonzalez singled through the middle. Becca Zawistowski grounded a ball to the shortstop, who tried to retire Miller at third. The throw was in time, but it was mishandled by the third baseman, loading the bases for the Rams. Skyler Rapuano pulled a single through the right side to drive in Miller with the first run of the game. Jessica Hennelly followed with a fielder's choice grounder that brought Gonzalez in for an insurance run.

Zaun retired Saint Joseph's in order in the seventh inning to secure URI's 10 th win of the year.

Inside the Box Scores
  • Rhode Island improved to 4-4 in conference play. With 17 Atlantic 10 games remaining, the Rams already have matched their league win total from a year ago, when they were 4-20.
  • Sophomore Katie Zaun improved to 4-7 overall, and 4-1 in her last five starts. Her lone loss during the run was a 1-0 defeat.
  • Zaun lowered her season earned-run average to 3.27.
  • Graduate student Elena Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with a double, one run scored and a sacrifice bunt on the day.
  • Sophomore Leilyn Alvarez was 1-for-2 with a stolen base in the second game.
  • Freshman Casey Miller was 1-for-2 and scored the game-winning run in the second game.
  • Rightfielder Syler Rapuano had the play of the day, ranging to the foul line to make a running grab of a sinking line drive off the bat of Saint Joseph's Riley York. Rapuano then turned and fired a bullet to third base to throw out Jessica Gaughan, who was trying to tag up on the play.
  • Rapuano later drove in the game-winning run with a single in the sixth inning.
What's Next
Rhode Island will play a non-conference at Bryant on Tuesday, April 4 at 4 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but it is being moved due to poor weather expected that day.
