How It Happened
Rhode Island's winless streak reached nine games as the Rams lost 6-2 at Loyola Chicago.
The Rams (16-27-1, 6-11 Atlantic 10) could not keep up with the Ramblers (21-21, 14-6 A-10), who swept the three-game series. URI is now 0-8-1 since it defeated Stonehill in the opening game of a doubleheader on April 12.
Rhode Island jumped out in front with a run in the top of the first.
Skyler Rapuano walked to start the game and moved to second on a ground out.
Rachel Zingerman grounded a single through the middle to bring Rapuano in with the first run of the game. Loyola Chicago tied the game in the bottom of the second when Nova Sinskul drove in Sydney Barnett with a two-out single to right center.
The Ramblers took advantage of control issues for
Liz Lynchard in the bottom of the third. Lynchard hit Teagan Sopczak, who was thrown out trying to steal. Madison Ebeling singled through the left side, but Lynchard came back to strikeout Sierra Sass. With two outs, Thomas drew a walk and Barnett was hit by a pitch to load the bases. On a 3-2 pitch Haley Wallace lined a two-run single up the middle to bring in Ebeling and Thomas. Tori Boysen followed with a single to drive Barnett in for a 4-1 lead.
Loyola continued to pull away with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sinskul singled, and Sopczak doubled with one out to move both runners into scoring position. A fly out to right put Rhody one out from getting out of the jam, but Ava Bieneman tapped a single in front of the plate to drive in Sinskul, and Thomas singled to shortstop to bring Sopczak home and make the score 6-1.
Rhody got one run in the top of the sixth when
Elena Gonzalez singled to drive in Zingerman, but that was as close as the Rams got.
